Johanna Breyer
Johanna has been an environmental remote sensing consultant at Environment Systems since February 2009. She has recently completed a PhD on remote sensing of the environment for biodiversity assessment at Aberystwyth University's Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences and also holds a degree in Environmental Biology from Aberystwyth. Johanna has worked as an associate scientist on a number of projects for Environment Systems since 2006.
Johanna possesses technical expertise in a wide range of optical and laser remote sensing techniques as well as GIS and specialises in the environmental application of remote sensing. She is particularly skilled in applying automatic image classification techniques for land cover mapping projects and the subsequent ecological interpretation of such maps on a landscape scale.
Since joining Environment Systems as a full-time member of staff she has been able to put these skills to good effect on a number of projects such as the updating of the Phase 1 habitat map of Wales from satellite imagery (Countryside Council for Wales) and an assessment of rocky outcrops on agriculturally disadvantaged soils (Welsh Assembly Government).
She also has an advisory role on the ecological and statistical aspects of other Environment Systems projects, such as the efficacy analysis of the Tir Cynnal and Tir Gofal agri-environment schemes and enjoys training colleagues and clients in image processing and interpretation techniques.
Johanna is a member of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc) as well as the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE).
