Successful peer review of satellite-based habitat mapping

Rule-based classification of multi-temporal satellite imagery for habitat and agricultural land cover mapping

Environment Systems staff, working with scientists from the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Aberystwyth University, are published in the Journal of Photgrammetry and Remote Sensing.

The paper evaluates the use of time-series of satellite data acquired over an annual cycle for mapping semi-natural habitats and agricultural land cover.  Using an ecologically driven rule based approach for classification; eCognition Expert software was used to map the distribution of habitats.

Environment Systems Director, Steve Keyworth says, “The key conclusion for our customers from this study is that a satellite-based approach is viable for mapping and monitoring habitats in the UK.   In addition, since writing this publication, a significant amount of further work has gone on to advance and refine the approach even further.”

The paper abstract can be found in: ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Volume 62, Issue 3, August 2007, Pages 165-185

The paper is also referenced by Definiens, who produces the eCognition software, upon which a lot of the work was base.
