Definiens GMES award with Aberystwyth University

Definiens GMES Innovation & Research Award 2007

The research award recognises superior research based on the Definiens Enterprise Image Intelligence Suite.

The award was received for the work carried out by Aberystwyth University, with Environment Systems, on mapping habitats in Wales for the Countryside Council for Wales.  The on-going work is producing cost-efficient mapping of natural habitats based on multi-temporal satellite imagery for the whole of Wales (c.2,000 sq km).

The winners for each of the two categories were selected by a committee consisting of;

  • Mark Doherty, Head of Earth Observation Exploitation and Services Division of the European Space Agency
  • Christine Bernot, Scientific officer, Space Research and Development of the European Commission
  •  Prof. Gerd Binnig, Nobel Laureate and founder of Definiens

The main evaluation criteria were innovation leading to increased automation and standardization, as well as the GMES service roll-out, customer satisfaction and potential cost savings.
