Katie Medcalf is Environment Director at Environment Systems with over 17 years of experience in delivering successful projects in environmental policy, agri-environment, ecology, GIS and remote sensing. She project manages the larger environmental based projects within the company and has an expert, overview role in all company work relating to the natural environment.
Katie obtained her PhD in ecological land restoration, looking at the reinstatement of species rich wet grassland communities called ‘Rhos’ pastures. She then gained a comprehensive knowledge of the ecology of the UK working on a wide range of surveying and monitoring projects, including Phase 1 habitat surveys, Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) soil surveys and agri-environment monitoring surveys. She consolidated this sound field work basis in her work for the Welsh Assembly Government, where, for over seven years she managed a GI and data policy team providing environmental evidence for monitoring and policy making in a central government context.
Katie is proficient in project management having run many large scale and strategic projects. Katie has put her knowledge of environmental processes and
landscape ecology to work for a number of clients include Countryside Council for Wales, Natural England, Welsh Assembly Government, Scottish Government, Environmental Protection Agency in Ireland, and local governments in Scotland, England and Wales. Katie is experienced in the use of GI as an evaluation tool and is an expert in environmental data interpretation and remote sensing analysis; she has a sound statistical background. Katie very much enjoys analysing and interpreting data and is an enthusiastic public speaker and facilitator.
Katie is a Chartered Environmentalist and a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. She is a past chair of the AGI Cymru and a member of the British Ecological Society.
